How to turn your smartphone into a document scanner

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

Scanning documents with your smartphone is easy and way better than simply taking a picture of a document. Scanner apps will actually detect text and pictures on a document and make them clearer and easier to read. They also detect the size of the document you're scanning to crop the image to a perfect size. In most cases, it's hard to tell the difference between a document that was scanned with a scanner app and a document that was scanned with an actual scanner.

While many scanner apps exist, I highly suggest using the free Adobe Scan app available for both Android and iOS devices. This app is very user-friendly, allows free unlimited scans, and will even convert your scan to a PDF! Converting to PDF will drastically reduce the file size compared to a regular photo. Your document will be ready for attaching to e-mail, printing, or anything you'd like.

Check out my examples below. I decided to use a page from a 22-year-old computer catalog I found in the basement :-) The first document was taken using my smartphone camera without the Adobe Scan app (just a regular photo). The second picture is of the same document that was "scanned" using the Adobe Scan app.

A picture of the same document taken with the Adobe Scan app (387 KB):

Notice how much better the document captured with the Adobe Scan app looks. The whites are whiter, the colors are brighter, the text is sharper and there's no glare. The document was also cropped to a perfect size. All of this was done automatically, and all I had to do was point my camera at a document and wait.
